Two exquisite wines with historical depth and rich flavour. Because they also breathe the breath of figurative painting. The name Messensee was not chosen by chance! This is the name of a historic district of the East Tyrolean municipality of Strassen, to which the "Strasserwirt - Ansitz zu Tirol" also belonged for centuries. It has been historically documented since 1399 at the latest, although a noble family - the lords of "Maessense" - can be traced back much earlier. The fact that they died out in the darkness of the past gave rise to imaginative legends in the vernacular, which date back to Roman times and have continued to this day.
Legends tell of an all-consuming landslide, a golden cone game of the local miners, the eruption of a mountain lake due to sacrilegious deeds or the intervention of a bear-like giant. However, everything is summarised in the toponym "Messa". This is the name of a Roman town or ancient settlement at this location. The "lake", which was probably added to the more recent place name, was once located in the valley basin and silted up around 1500. It is no coincidence that these table wines are now adorned with unusual labels - designed by none other than Jürgen Messensee (* 1936, ✝2024), who is known to a wide audience for his expressive artworks, which can be found in the Albertina, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Leopold Museum. Who better than him to represent the connection between local history and an eventful family saga? Although he grew up in Vienna, the artist feels connected to Tyrol and committed to the region.
Messensee white & red are not only an accompaniment to a delicious menu, but also offer a surprising enjoyment of art.
