GAULT MILLAU

  • 2024: 1 toque, 12 points

The Strasserwirt is an East Tyrolean institution and has been a reliable stop-off point for hungry people and those seeking a break for generations. In lovingly designed parlours with cross vaults, tradition meets modern comfort. Werner Gander ensures culinary continuity in the kitchen. Upon reservation, the chef de cuisine spoils à la carte guests with a three- to five-course menu of regional specialities, impeccably prepared with local ingredients. After the meal, the attentive service staff competently recommend from the extensive selection of East Tyrolean schnapps.

  • 2023: 1 toque, 12 points

The menu - three, four or five courses, depending on taste - is clearly tailored to the house guests in its composition and style. In fact, according to information, only a maximum of two tables per evening are offered to external guests. The house-marinated salmon trout carpaccio was pleasing, the basil gnocchi in Parmesan sauce followed the logic described above. And the main course? Medallions of milk-fed veal on mashed potatoes and sugar snap peas. Just a classic and proper half-board dish. The service is friendly, the wine selection is varied and characterised by quality.

  • 2022: 13 points, 2 toques

It's a shame that the Strasserwirt now only cooks in the evening. But after more than 20 years as head chef, Werner Gander deserves a little more peace and quiet. After all, he and his team are still fully committed to their work and have a great love of detail. The journey through East Tyrol offered as a menu is recommended to all those who want to get to know the region better in terms of flavour. After all, where better to do this than in these cosily decorated walls? Anyone who savours the well-stocked wine list will be pleased to know that you can also stay overnight here.

  • 2021: 13 points, 2 toques

For some time now, the Strasserwirt, whose history dates back to the 6th century, has only been open for dinner. The kitchen therefore focuses mainly on half-board guests, who can choose between salmon trout fillet, pork chops with roasted potatoes or chanterelle mushrooms with duck breast, depending on the day's specials. The menu also includes specialities such as venison medallions with juniper sauce or trout stuffed with herbs. An amaretto parfait with strawberries provides a sweet finish. Comfortable rooms invite à la carte guests to spend the night in the hotel.

Falstaff

  • 2023: 85 points, 2 Falstaff forks

Head chef Werner Gander takes centre stage in the beautiful, historic manor house. His daily changing three- to five-course menus are a light interpretation of Tyrolean cuisine. The wines are also top class!

  • 2022: 85 points, 2 Falstaff forks

"Herrenansitz" sounds heavy, sedate and dignified at first. But the name is deceptive. Werner Gander's cuisine is light, colourful, varied and full of surprises. The menus change daily.

  • 2021: 85 points, 2 Falstaff forks

Tasty and visually appealing Tyrolean specialities made from regional products come from Werner Gander's kitchen - à la carte or as multi-course surprise menus. Solid wine list.

WOMEN'S POWER AT THE HERRENANSITZ ZU TIROL IN STRASSEN

This year, the "Strasserwirt" surprises with a new culinary concept. Head chef Werner Gander says goodbye to the classic menu and exclusively serves three- to five-course gourmet menus for his guests. With different dishes and ingredients every day, each menu is a little surprise and a culinary world of its own. We can only reveal so much: the asparagus soup with cress is wonderfully creamy, the homemade gnocchi in a white wine sauce like in Bella Italia and the roast veal tender pink. The tasteful and timelessly furnished rooms and the atmospheric spa area are less surprising, but always reliably cosy. In the hotel, which is excellently run by the Bachmann family, you can feel that guests are being well looked after, thanks to the many long-serving employees. "Our employees are our most valuable asset," say the two Bachmann sisters, who have been running the "Herrenansitz zu Tirol" with united female power for over ten years.

Within the heavy, historic walls of the property, which was built in the 6th century, chef Werner Gander serves up stylish, modern and down-to-earth cuisine every evening. If you join him on a culinary journey through East Tyrol, you will discover air-dried beef shank, East Tyrolean alpine cheese soup and Schlipfkrapfen, followed by lamb shank in rosemary juices and fluffy curd cheese dumplings. The menu also offers tempting dishes and it is really difficult to make a decision. This is remedied by the surprise menu in the evening. The tasteful, cosy and timelessly furnished rooms and the atmospheric spa area offer no surprises. It sounds almost unimaginable, but the foundation walls of the four-star hotel date back to the sixth century. The Bachmann family and the Strasserwirt team therefore run one of the most traditional inns in the country. Formerly a post office in the Puster Valley as the "Herrenansitz zu Tirol", the house is still a popular destination for travellers today. This is due to the beautiful rooms, which are simple, tasteful and super timeless, but newly designed, and the distinguished cuisine under the direction of Werner Gander. He combines down-to-earth ingredients with modern influences and emphasises health. He sources farmhouse bread and cheese from neighbouring farms and specialities such as truffle potatoes come from the vegetable garden. You can taste the culinary style right through to the eggnog parfait. Before that, you can hardly decide between cold-smoked venison ham, baked goat's cheese pralines or beef goulash. It's best to choose the evening surprise menu.

MONTE GUIDE: THE 250 BEST HOTELS IN THE ALPS

We are delighted to be listed in the Monte Guide as one of the 250 best hotels in the Alps!

"Herrenansitz. It doesn't get any lower. Must be, given the tradition and history that the hotel exudes. Of course there is a lot of carving and panelling, but there is also something different. The minimalist and the new. One of the two young hotel managers is actually an architect and she knows what she's doing. Marvellous!"
