6th-11th cent.
Pot fragments, which were found during renovation work and are also on display in the hotel, date back to the 6th century according to a scientific report by the University of Vienna. According to oral tradition, the huge Messa landslide occurred in the early 11th century. The toponym Messa is still remembered today by the fraction Messensee, to which the residence originally belonged. The main house of the manor was built on the remains of the building.
12th-13th cent.
The name Messensee has been documented in documents since the 12th century, for example around 1190 by the court witness Altman de Massense. In 1251, Bishop Konrad II of Freising records that Alheidis de Mässense and her brother Gerold had transferred said serfs to the diocese of Freising. In 1299, the Urbarium of the County of Görz again lists 24 Viertelhuben in Maessensee are mentioned.

The Freisingian charter of 1305 states that "the lake is home to 2000 fish for the bishop" and is surrounded by many meadows. In a later charter, the lake - incidentally the result of the landslide around 1000 AD - is expressly described as the Mehssense. Mehssense mentioned. The fact that we find a lake here in the main valley and in a valley location speaks in favour of the relevance of Messensee in the High and Late Middle Ages.
1396 to 1399
The earliest known evidence of the present name of the municipality of Strassen dates back to the period from 1396 to 1399. Among other things, Paul von Welsperg acquires "an estate at Mässensee near Strassen". In 1396 we encounter "Jacob, son of Leo on the Strass under Hewnfels". The mention of "vom Ansitz Maessense" in 1399, which Georg von Welsperg probably acquired soon afterwards, is particularly noteworthy for the history of the house.

1500
The name "Twbolt an der Strasßen" (also Diepold) is linked to a very early name for the ancestral home of our hotel. Katharina, a daughter of "Diepold Strasser am Diepoldsbau", married Christian Frondeiger (from Frondeigen, today's municipality of Toblach) soon after 1500. Today they are considered the progenitors of the later Strasser dynasty and innkeepers.
strasser
1517 until 1626
Christian Frondeiger and Katharina or their descendants, namely Hans, Mathes, Blasi, Jakob, Pankraz and Johannes, ran the "Wirtstafern am Sant bei der hohen Linde" for almost a century. Johannes Strasser sells the tavern to his brother-in-law Ambros Prunner for 860 guilders in 1626.
mayr
1627 until 1789
The Strasser dynasty was succeeded by Marx Mayr (1602-1681), who married Christina Anrater from Sesto, a lawyer's and innkeeper's daughter, around 1626. He was followed by his son Hans Mayr, who was succeeded by his youngest brother Franz (the elder). His son Marx finally handed over to Franz Xaver Ambros Mayr (the younger), who was to play an outstanding role in the recent history of the municipality of Strassen. However, his son, also Franz Xaver Mayr, was forced to sell the property due to severe financial difficulties.
gasser
1789 until 1838
Anton Gasser and his wife Walburga Achammer and his second wife Anna Valtiner and their son Bernhard were unable to cope with the heavy financial burden in the long term, which led to the auction of the "real estate of Bernhard Gasßer, who had been a landlord in the village of Strasßen and was placed under curatorship".
bürgler
1838 until 2009
According to the deed of sale dated 14 December 1838, Andrä Birgler von Abfaltern acquired the inn with pertinence, which had already been considerably reduced in size within a century. He was followed by his son Josef and then his grandson Josef. Eckard and his daughter Elisabeth kept the inn and hotel in the family until spring 2009.
bachmann
2009 until today
In July 2009, the family of building contractor Johann Bachmann from Winnebach near Innichen took over the Strasserwirt - a man who has developed a very special love for the estate and its ambience over many years.
Since then, his daughters Judith and Astrid have been running the hotel together. It is also their endeavour to preserve the hospitality tradition and rich past that is interwoven with the building and to carry it into the future with a keen sense of the new requirements and wishes.
